Back in college, I became addicted to junk food, to diet pills,

I felt terrible, I didn't have any energy at all, and my grades began to drop like a stone. I just couldn't stay awake at night to study like I needed to! Worse still, I was depressed beyond belief! All I could do was look in the mirror and cry about what I had done to myself.

Then, after about my 50th little "pity party" - crying and moaning about my woeful condition - I finally decided to get a grip and DO SOMETHING about my weight problem.

So, what did I do?

I Bought into the Diet Industry's Marketing Hype and Became . . .
. . . a Money-Wasting, "I'll-Believe-Anything-You-Tell-Me," Diet Pill Junkie!

When it came right down to it, I really wanted to believe that there was a "miracle cure" for my weight problem. Why? Well, I guess I didn't want to give up all the "good stuff" that came with my unhealthy lifestyle. Know what I mean?

I really wish I had known better, but sadly, I was so embarrassed about my weight issues that I didn't ask any of my friends or family if they knew of any valid, medically-proven ways to lose weight the healthy way.

So I bought into "The Lie" about these "magic" little diet pills, and I spent SO much money on them it was ridiculous!! You see, I was bound and determined to lose that weight, and I didn't care how much it cost (as long as I didn't have to change any of my unhealthy behaviors!)

And boy, did I ever lose the weight! Yes sir, you bet I did!! In the first 2 months of taking those diet pills, I lost about 20 pounds!! And I thought, "WOW! These pills really are magic! I'm going to lose my 40 pounds of fat in no time!!"

But a funny thing happened on the way to The Skinny Farm . . .

As you may know, most of those diet pills are just stimulants of one sort or another, and they act to suppress your appetite, which of course makes you less hungry, so of course you eat less.

But once I started eating less, something else happened: my metabolism ground to a halt. And when that happened, the amount of fat my body burned slowed way down. In fact, it just stopped. Long story short, I didn't lose any more weight, and I capped out at about 20 pounds of lost blubber. Problem was, I had easily another 20 pounds to go before I reached my goal weight, and IT WOULD NOT COME OFF!

I'll bet you can guess what happened next. That's right: I stopped taking those diet pills. They weren't working anyway, and man, were they ever expensive. Instead, I started eating my regular diet of junk food again, and . . .

Before I knew it, I gained back every single pound I had lost!

AND, to make matters worse, I gained an extra 5 pounds on top of that. Now I was 45 pounds overweight, and I became even more depressed than before.

I felt like an idiot, too, because I had been raised by my parents to believe that "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Here I had gone and spent all this money on diet pills (money that I didn't have to lose), and while I did lose some weight at first, that all stopped after about 60 days. Then I fell right back into my old junk food habits.

"Well," I thought, "I guess I'll just have to give up my junk food and go on a diet."

I was so impressed with myself for finally realizing that I had to make some changes to what I was eating. And seeing as everyone around me was on some sort of restricted diet, I figured that was the way to go.

The first diet I tried was "The Salad Diet." Just about every skinny person I knew ate salads all the time, so for about a month the only thing I ate was salad. And I lost about 15 pounds that first month on The Salad Diet . . .

. . . and then . . . I just couldn't look at . . . let alone eat . . .
ANOTHER STUPID SALAD!!!

I felt like I was going to LOSE MY LUNCH if I had to eat another salad! Good grief, I hated salads after that month!!

So, now what? You guessed it! I said, "To heck with this Salad Diet stuff. I'm going to give myself a well-deserved break and eat a little comfort food for a while."

. . . and 20 days later, I had gained back every, single one of the 15 pounds I had lost.

Now, I could go on and bore you with stories of how I tried one diet after another - and how I spent TONS OF MONEY on one ineffectual "diet plan" after another - including Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers.

But I'm willing to bet that if you're still reading this page, you've probably been on one or more of those diets. And I can pretty much guess what your experience was like when you tried them.

Why Do Most Diet Programs Fail?

1.) They fail because they don't incorporate important tenets of biological science,

2.) They fail because they don't incorporate important tenets of behavioral science, and

3.) They fail because they don't incorporate important tenets of psychological science.

To elaborate a little, most diet programs fail because they focus on short-term gimmicks instead of long-term solutions. They trick you into using "easy" techniques that will help you lose a few easy pounds (mostly water, not fat), but they do nothing to help you enact and maintain a long-term, permanent, "healthy living" lifestyle that is based on sound principles of biological, behavioral, and psychological science.

In short, most weight loss programs are based on a "Deprivation Model" that expects you to severely decrease your food intake AND to exponentially increase your level of physical activity at the same time. While you may think that seems like the right thing to do, it simply is not sustainable over long periods of time. You can't keep it up!

So, what happens is you end up stuck in a cycle of "Yo-Yo Dieting." Yo-Yo Dieting is when you gain some initial success at losing weight, but you aren't able to maintain that success over the long-term, and you gain the weight right back. Then you seek out a different "restrictive" diet plan in order to lose that weight you regained, and the same cycle starts all over again.

You see, when you deprive your body of the nutrition it needs - while at the same time imposing strenuous physical activity upon it - it's true that you will lose some weight at first. But in a very short period of time, your body will go into something called "Starvation Mode," which means your metabolism will shut down completely.

Now, when your metabolism shuts down, your body can't burn enough calories to lose fat. In fact, it does the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you want it to do: it hoards all its fat stores in order to "ride out" what it perceives as a famine. This is a defense mechanism for survival that has been conditioned into our bodies over many generations of time, and the end result is that you stop losing fat.

"Deprivation Mode" Diets
ARE NOT SUSTAINABLE OVER THE LONG TERM!
Medical Science Dictates that THEY WILL FAIL EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

This is where the psychological and behavioral aspects of weight loss come into play. If you aren't learning the psychological and behavioral techniques required to develop and sustain long-term, healthy-living habits, then you have no chance of keeping your weight off permanently.

The problem is, no matter how much you want to, you just can't sustain the willpower to stay on a severely restricted diet for an "endless" amount of time.
